Small Sat Coordination

Need for Intelligent Small Sat Coordination

A satellite constellation is a group of artificial satellites working together as a system to provide permanent global or near-global coverage, such that at any time everywhere on Earth at least one satellite is visible. These satellites can communicate via a centralized or a decentralized coordination mechanism. Currently this coordination involves manual interference and the system cannot take important decisions to perform necessary actions on its own. This is where we are working towards harnessing the potential of AI to provide autonomous decision-making ability to the Sat constellation for optimal data collection and coordination.

In the recent few years, Deep Learning, has been considered to provide the best set of algorithms to learn representations. On the other hand, Reinforcement Learning (RL) as a framework for learning sequential decision-making tasks has been undervalued so far. But combining the capabilities of both holds the ability to learn very good state representations and solve real world challenges. The targeted use cases for this technology are listed below –

  • Detection of Illegal Maritime activities

Small Sat Constellation can help track traffic surveillance and protect against illegal maritime activities.

  • Detection Of Natural disasters

Using AI capabilities in  small sat coordination system, we can achieve optimal data collection and avoid missing important information useful for natural disaster detection.

  • Assessing economic impact of a pandemic

We can leverage the power of AI to identify how big is the reduction in trade activity due to a pandemic and should it be attributed mostly to exports or to imports?
